Kay Borleis, a senior art director, had an eerie experience while participating in the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team’s Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run on the Honolulu Mauka trails in Oahu back in January 2019.
As she embarked on the fourth lap of the HURT 100 race, her friend Cassie captured some photographs, revealing a dark figure appearing to be a Night Marcher—an ancient Hawaiian warrior ghost.
The HURT 100 race consists of a challenging 20-mile loop through rainforests, which participants complete five times.

Borelis and her friend were on the fourth lap when Cassie took the photos, capturing what seems to be a figure draped in a cloak passing by Borelis while she was running.
The mysterious encounter took an even more unsettling turn when Cassie’s mother texted her about a “live” photo that showed the dark figure in motion.
Borelis and Cassie couldn’t recall passing anyone on that particular trail during the race, adding to the mysterious nature of the incident.
Borelis, who had never dropped out of a race before, experienced an unusual sharp pain in her foot during that fourth lap, leading her to withdraw from the race.
Post-race, the pair sought help from friends to understand the photo, discovering the legend of the Night Marchers.
According to Hawaiian folklore, Night Marchers are the ghosts of ancient warriors who protected sacred individuals.
Legend has it that any mortal who gazes upon or is seen by the Night Marchers would meet a gruesome and violent end.

However, proper respect, fear, and reverence, such as lying still on the ground, could spare them from harm.
Fortunately, Borelis and Cassie did not directly encounter the Night Marcher, but the mysterious figure captured in the photograph adds a supernatural twist to their trail run experience.
