Lagos police claim to have discovered weapons in Alaba shanties

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that it raided some shanties located around the Alaba International Market, Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, following credible information.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, made the disclosure through his Twitter handle, stating that some suspected criminals were arrested and weapons recovered from them. He denied reports of a fire outbreak at the market, stating that the shanties were set on fire after the raid.

According to sources, there was panic in the area after the fire gutted some shanties, with some traders resorting to self-help to put out the fire before emergency responders arrived. The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that none of the stores in the market was affected.

She said that shanties, not shops, were on fire and that the incident had degenerated into a security situation as officials were unable to gain access into the area to carry out their duties.
