EFCC apprehends 19 Akwa Ibom State University students over internet fraud

Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained 19 Akwa Ibom State University students on Friday, April 28, 2023, for alleged involvement in internet fraud. In a statement released on its website on Tuesday, the commission revealed that the undergraduates were apprehended at their private hostels situated at Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge in Ikot Akpadem, Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

According to the EFCC, the students had been under surveillance for several months over their suspected involvement in romance scams, fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions, and impersonation. Recovered from them were multiple laptops and mobile phones. The commission stated that they would be taken to court once investigations are completed.
