Adamawa sets to prosecute individuals responsible for Binani's illegal declaration as winner

Adamawa State Government has requested that the state police command investigate the crisis that occurred following the illegal declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate, Aishatu Dahiru, also known as Binani, as the winner of the supplementary governorship election held on April 15.

The Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice for the state has written to the Commissioner of Police to commence investigations for the possible prosecution of all those found culpable in the saga that occurred during the polls.

On April 16, controversy ensued when the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, declared Binani the winner of the governorship poll after the supplementary poll held in the state on April 15. However, on April 19, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer for the election in the state, Muhammed Melee, declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, as the winner of the governorship election.

In a release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, has mandated the police to start investigations for possible prosecution of all those behind the botched ‘civilian coup’. The government has pledged its support to the state police command to ensure the logical conclusion of the investigation.

The declaration by Hudu while collation was still ongoing of the APC candidate as the winner of the governorship elections resulted in a breach of the peace in the state.
