A tragic accident at Ituku junction along Port Harcourt-Enugu Highway has claimed the lives of 15 occupants of a Toyota bus, as reported by the Enugu State Police Command. The incident, which occurred on Saturday at approximately 8.30 pm, involved a head-on collision between the bus and a Mercedes truck, resulting in a devastating fire that left the bus burnt beyond recognition.
The statement, signed by Port Harcourt Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, revealed that the bus was from Enugu South Mass Transit and was coming from Aba, Abia State.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the Mercedes Tipper truck, loaded with cement and traveling against traffic from Enugu City, collided with the bus, causing both vehicles to burst into flames. All occupants of the bus, except for the Tipper driver who survived and is currently receiving medical treatment, were burnt beyond recognition.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident, particularly during the Easter season when Christians around the world are commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He extended condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.
In response, the CP ordered the state traffic officers to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, including identifying the deceased victims and their relatives, and submitting an actionable report.
The police also emphasized the importance of obeying road traffic rules and regulations to ensure safety on the road, urging motorists to exercise caution, patience, and adherence to traffic rules. As per police instructions, the remains of the victims were to be evacuated from the crash site.
The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the need for vigilance and responsible driving to prevent accidents and protect lives on the road.
