In a statement released to the media on Friday, Garba Shehu, the spokesperson for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, said that the upcoming 2023 general elections will proceed as planned, irrespective of the recent controversies surrounding the naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Shehu further clarified that there are no intentions by President Buhari to extend his government beyond May 29, 2023, or establish an interim government.

The spokesperson made it clear that there is no truth to the claims that President Buhari is working towards installing an interim government or truncating democracy, a system he has helped to maintain, not only in Nigeria but throughout the African continent.

Shehu stated that those peddling the idea have nothing to gain, but the creation of panic and the incitement of the public against the federal government. The narrative, he added, is a dangerous ploy by those who are afraid of losing their elections.
