A 300 level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo state, Nigeria. Olona Joseph Oluwapelumi, who reportedly committed suicide due to alleged depression and financial constraints. Olona, a student in the department of industrial design, was said to have taken his own life in his off-campus lodge located in the Aule area of the state capital.

According to reports, the student hanged himself in his room. His friends, who visited his room on the morning of the incident, found it locked and upon breaking in, discovered his body hanging.

They immediately contacted the authorities and the police were called to the scene. Some of his friends reported that his Facebook page contained posts about suicidal thoughts and pleas for financial assistance to run his business.

The news of Olona’s death was met with shock and disbelief by students and staff at the university. Many of his classmates were devastated by the loss of their friend and expressed their condolences to his family and loved ones.

The leadership of the Student Union released a statement expressing sadness at the loss of their colleague and friend, Olona Joseph Oluwapelumi, popularly known as Tart Angle.

The statement read: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Olona Joseph Oluwapelumi. popular known as Tart Angle. who passed away on Sat 21st Jan 2023.

The statement went on to say: “I know we are all saddened by his death and we’re sending our condolences to his family and friends. Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions. which might include shock, sadness. and confusion. We want to assure you that we, the Students Union, care about you and the feelings you may be experiencing.”

The state police image maker, Funmi Odunlami, confirmed the death of the student and said the incident was reported to the police. Odunlami said “His body had been taken to the morgue and investigation has started to unravel the reasons behind his action, but it was a case of suicide.”

The university authority was yet to make any official statement yet, however, the university community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of their students.

It is a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health and providing support for students who may be struggling with depression and financial constraints. The university is expected to release a statement and offer support for the students and staff affected by this tragic event.
